KEY LARGO FISHING REPORT

Key Largo Fishing Update 4/3/11

This week we got out twice offshore on 1/2 day trips and the clips were popping.Day one sloppy seas and blue water right at the reef line so we set troll. Almost instantly( just getting the 3rd line out) the two in the water went off with big skip jack tunas long runs and bent rods started the day.Re set up all 4 lines and hooked up all 4 with school size dolphin up to 6lbs.Long story short Ran in to fish several times,Blackfin tuna, dolphin(got a 20lb cow) Big skip jacks and cudas in deep water. Day two blue water was out about 2 miles, found a broken weed line and hit dolphin right away.Fish were up to 10 lbs and ran into them about 5 times.Lots of action, good food fish and good fighters anglers had a great time. Dolphin fishing has been hit or miss threw the winter but with water temps around 75 today the dolphin should hang and peak in the next few months and remain good threw the summer.

Prior to today lots of trips to the reef this month. The fishing has held up quite well, lots of action and variety. Snapper, yellowtails, macks, porgys have been the standard with jacks, shark and cudas as well. In the past 2 weeks lots more hogfish and some pompano have been showing up. Big Muttons on live ballyhoo mostly just before the full moon. Lots of grouper but not open till may 1.Expect permit and big African pompano to show up any time now.

Backcountry fishing has picked up since the cold fronts are coming to an end. Trout up to 24"mixed in with jacks and ladyfish are over the grass flats in decent numbers. Redfish are up on the flats and in the pot holes. Some snook in the creeks but mostly snapper, sheepshead and some small tarpon. Water levels in the eastern bay are still skinny but that should change with the lack of north winds and shoreline casting will pick up. Around Flamingo all of the above and some big tarpon showing up, mostly on the full moon. Backcountry or ocean side April threw June is a great time for fishing in the Keys.

Tight Lines Capt.Bob
