Key Largo Fishing Report 2/27/13 Inshore Reef and Backcountry Fishing

Fishing the inshore reefs off Key Largo yesterday the bite was on, wind was blowing around 20 out of the south but inshore conditions where only around a 2 foot chop. Looking for some good eating fish for my clients they were impressed by the number of species and quality of the fish off the Florida Keys so close to land. These folks where no strangers to the ocean with accomplishments including sailing around the world and fishing in many locations. Setting up in around 18 feet of water and fishing shrimp, cut baits and live ballyhoo we started out with Mutton snappers and Big cero macks. Also Boated ,mangrove snapper, porgy's and some nice yellowtails. Inbetween the food fish there were plenty of jacks bending the light tackle rods and Big barracuda  on live bait.

Backcountry fishing in the eastern bay has been like a month ahead this year with the warmer winter. lots of good sized sea trout up to and over 24"are around the creek mouths and grass beds, even some fish tight to the shoreline while we are looking for snook. These are spawning fish that we do not usually see till a bit later in the year. The snook bite this past week has been good with some days better then others, but still we do manage to hook up some on most every trip. With the moon full right now the best snook action has been early in the morning and later in the day. Mixed in with the snook are some big jack crevell, mangrove snapper and redfish. Fishing in the Backcountry is light tackle casting(8 and 10 lb line) with lures and bait in 1 to 4 feet of water, good action and variety of species in a wilerness setting.
