KEY LARGO FISHING REPORT

Key Largo Backcountry/Inshore Reef Fishing 2/08/12

After a steady diet of reef trips in the last two weeks it was a nice change to get in the backcountry today. Overcast conditions, light winds and lots of fish made for a nice trip in the back today. Anglers Paul and Barb hooked up on the first casts and the action was quite steady all day. Fished sea trout first and found average keeper fish 18"up to and over 22"with some big lady fish mixed in. We had our limit of trout in a few drifts over the grass beds. Moving along we moved up on the shallow flats and got in to redfish up to 7 lbs and boated a dozen. Also found pompano, jacks and some decent mangrove snapper. Found fish on every spot we hit, live shrimp and Berkley gulps did the trick.

Reef is still hot with all varieties of snapper, hogfish, and some good size black and red groupers (Groupers closed till May). Ballyhoo on all the spots and tons of Spanish and cero macks slashing threw them. Fishing with cut baits and shrimp is keeping the light tackle (12 lb test) rods bent. Live ballyhoo on 20 lb spin is hooking us in to grouper up to 12 lbs,and lots of black tip and lemon shark this past week. Inshore reefs or in the backcountry light tackle fishing off Key Largo has been very consistent with lots of action and good fish on every trip.
