KEY LARGO FISHING REPORT

Key Largo Reef /Backcountry Fishing 12/11/11

Fishing the shallow reefs off Key largo has been the most popular trip in the past month. This fishing holds up well as cold front are starting to make there way threw the keys. Lots of action on the inside rock piles and a wide range of species have been showing up. Snappers include mangrove, muttons, yellowtail and lane. Groupers both red and black. hogfish and porgies, macks Spanish and cero. Acton fish as well with jacks, shark, cuda and even bonefish witch have made there way off the flats into the deeper water. You just don't know what you might hook into. Trips are averaging 8 to 12 different types of fish and good numbers as well. Fishing shrimp and cut baits on 12lb spin and live ballyhoo on 25lb tackle has been getting the job done. the reef will hold up threw the winter months and into the spring.

Got in the backcountry a few times in the past weeks and fishing has been good ,this week we found snook, reds, trout, snapper, jacks and ladyfish. the action is on the far end but not all the way to Flamingo. Fish were eating both live bait and Berkley gulps. Creek moths and shallow grass beds are holding most of the fish. Good to see the snook making a come back in the eastern bay after a bad fish kill from a cold snap in 2009.Best fishing in the back are the calm days between the cold fronts.
